Why is my Tesla Powerwall not charging?

Is it actually a problem, or normal behavior?

Plenty of "not charging" situations are just the Powerwall doing its job. Open the Tesla app and check these before anything else:

• The battery is already full. It won't charge past 100% — that's normal.
• Backup reserve is set high. In backup-focused modes the system may hold energy instead of cycling it the way you'd expect.
• Low solar production. A run of cloudy Florida afternoons, heavy soiling, or a shaded array means less surplus to store — good reason to keep the panels clean.
• The grid is down. During an outage the Powerwall prioritizes powering your home, not filling itself.

If the mode and reserve explain what you're seeing, there's probably nothing wrong at all.

What should I check first in the Tesla app?

The Tesla app is your fastest diagnostic tool. Look at these, in order:

• Operating mode (Self-Powered, Time-Based Control, or Backup-Only) — the wrong mode can explain odd charging.
• Backup reserve percentage — set too high or too low for what you actually want.
• Live solar production and home usage — is there really any surplus to store right now?
• Any alerts or fault messages — write down the exact wording.
• Firmware / connectivity status — an offline gateway can't manage charging correctly.

Snap a quick photo of each screen — it gives a service tech a huge head start if you do end up needing help.

What can stop a Powerwall from charging?

Past the settings, the usual culprits are physical and electrical:

• A tripped breaker or open disconnect between the panels, the Powerwall, and the gateway.
• An offline Tesla Gateway — if it's lost communication, the charging logic falls apart.
• Stale firmware that hasn't updated because the gateway can't reach the internet.
• Heat throttling — a Florida garage or a west wall can push the unit to protect itself in extreme temperatures.
• An actual battery or power-electronics fault, which usually shows a persistent alert.

When should I call a professional for my Powerwall?

Call for service when the simple checks don't add up — specifically when you see a persistent fault alert, the battery sits at a low charge despite strong sun and correct settings, the gateway stays offline after a router restart, or the unit keeps dropping offline or won't hold a charge.
