Why do panels almost always outlive the roof they sit on?
It comes down to a mismatch in lifespans. Solar panels are built for the long haul — most carry 25-year power warranties and degrade only around 0.5% a year, so they are still productive past two decades. The asphalt-shingle roof underneath them is not on that schedule. In Florida's sun, heat, and hurricane exposure, a typical architectural shingle roof lasts roughly 15 to 25 years, and standard 3-tab shingles even less. Do the math and it is obvious: at some point during the panels' life, the roof will need to be replaced while the panels are still going strong.
